U-2 pilots driving chase cars ensuring the safety of their fellow U-2 pilots as they launch or land the aircraft. The U-2 is a single-seat, single-engine, high-altitude/near space reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft providing signals, imagery and electronic measurements and signature intelligence. The plane, which flies up to altitudes of 70000 feet, is also capable of gathering a variety of imagery, including multi-spectral electro-optic, infrared, and synthetic aperture radar products which can be stored or sent to ground exploitation centers. In addition, it also supports high-resolution, broad-area synoptic coverage provided by the optical bar camera producing traditional film products, which are developed and analyzed after landing.

Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident (Visit www.coldwar.org)Charles Fishburne produced this video about "Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident," an exhibition organized by The Cold War Museum and now on display at the Virginia Historical Society. Visit www.coldwar.org. About the exhibition: On May 1, 1960, an American U-2 reconnaissance plane was shot down over the Soviet Union by a surface-to-air missile. Francis Gary Powers—a civilian pilot flying for the Central Intelligence Agency—was unable to activate the self-destruct mechanism and the plane crashed largely intact. News of the event caused Premier Khrushchev to storm out of a summit conference in Paris with President Eisenhower. Because the U-2 was specifically designed for covert surveillance, Powers, a native Virginian, was tried and convicted as a spy and sentenced to ten years imprisonment. In 1962 he was exchanged in Germany for a Soviet agent. On display through May 30, 2010.
